No, you don’t need to upgrade.
If you don’t have a PSP already then hold out for the new model, but if you don’t feel like laying out the money for an upgraded console then you’ll be pleased to hear that the PSP 2000 plays the same games and offers the same media and support as the PSP 3000.
The differences (in the main) are cosmetic and they are as follows -

Built In Microphone
Upgraded the video output to support gameplay output on interlaced displays using composite video cables.
